Church of San Juan Bautista

The Church of San Juan Bautista, known locally as Iglesia Matriz de San Juan Bautista, stands proudly in the historic heart of Arucas, Gran Canaria. Often referred to as the Cathedral of Arucas due to its grandiose appearance, this architectural marvel is one of the most emblematic buildings on the island. Its construction began in 1909 and spanned over 70 years, a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of the local community and artisans.

The Historical Roots

The origins of the Church of San Juan Bautista can be traced back to the early 16th century. Following the conquest of Gran Canaria by the Catholic Monarchs in 1483, a new settlement emerged in Arucas, mirroring the Castilian model. By 1503, a small hermitage dedicated to Saint John the Baptist had been established, serving as the focal point for the burgeoning community. Elevated to the status of a parish in 1515, the original church underwent several restorations and expansions over the centuries, reflecting the growth and prosperity of the region.

The Old Temple

The 17th century saw the transformation of the simple hermitage into a Renaissance-style temple with three naves. Significant modifications continued into the late 17th and 19th centuries, including the addition of a Romanesque-style bell tower and a neoclassical tower with a clock. Despite these enhancements, the old church eventually fell into disrepair, leading to the decision to construct a new, more magnificent edifice.

The New Church

The current Church of San Juan Bautista began to take shape on March 19, 1909, under the guidance of Catalan architect Manuel Vega y March. The project was embraced enthusiastically by the local population, who contributed both financially and through their labor. Constructed from the blue stone of Arucas, the church is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture, showcasing the exceptional stonemasonry skills of the local craftsmen.

The church's layout is almost a perfect square, with three longitudinal naves interrupted by a wide transept, creating a central and harmonious space. The main nave is twice as wide as the lateral ones, which extend around the apse to form an ambulatory. The exterior is characterized by its intricate and abundant decorative details, with each façade flanked by two sharp, polygonal towers.

Stunning Stained Glass

One of the most striking features of the Church of San Juan Bautista is its stunning stained glass windows. These were crafted by the renowned French firm Maumejean and were funded by donations from individuals, brotherhoods, and local groups. The vibrant windows not only enhance the church's neo-Gothic aesthetic but also bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

Artistic Treasures

Beyond its architectural splendor, the Church of San Juan Bautista houses a significant collection of religious art, much of which was transferred from the old church. Among the most notable pieces is the 16th-century Crucified Christ, which now presides over the main altar. Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

One of the church's most revered spaces is the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Granted privileged altar status by Pope Pius IX in 1876, the chapel features beautiful stained glass windows depicting the Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Anthony Mary Claret, donated by the Brotherhood of Mount Carmel in 1920. The chapel also houses statues of the Virgin of Mount Carmel and Saint Teresa, brought from Valencia in the early 20th century.

The Baptismal Chapel

The Baptismal Chapel is another highlight, adorned with stained glass windows illustrating scenes from the lives of Saint Silvester, Saint Francis Xavier, and Saint John the Baptist. At the center of the chapel is the intricately carved blue stone baptismal font, crafted by Domingo Benavides in 1862. Above it stands the beloved San Juanito, a small ivory statue of Saint John the Baptist.
