Burg Lippspringe

Nestled in the picturesque town of Bad Lippspringe in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the ruins of Burg Lippspringe stand as a testament to the region's rich history and enduring allure. This ancient water castle, once a formidable fortress, now offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the past, surrounded by the serene beauty of the Kurpark and the Lippe River springs.

The Historical Tapestry of Burg Lippspringe

The origins of Burg Lippspringe trace back to 1312 when it was first mentioned as a possession of the Paderborn Cathedral Chapter. The castle was likely constructed shortly before this time, perhaps on the site of an earlier fortress linked to the noble family of Lippspringe, first recorded in 1235. Strategically positioned at the Lippe springs, the castle served as a retreat for the cathedral chapter from the increasingly independent city of Paderborn and as a safeguard for their local estates.

Throughout its history, Burg Lippspringe experienced numerous sieges and reconstructions. In 1350, it was captured and set ablaze by Count Otto of Waldeck, leading to the construction of the current ruinous manor house. The castle's strategic importance made it a target during the feuds of the early 15th century, resulting in near-total destruction in 1414. Despite being fortified again in 1482, the castle suffered significant damage during the Thirty Years' War, leaving it in a state of disrepair.

By 1660, the castle was no longer leased and fell into further ruin following the Seven Years' War. The 1760s saw the rebuilding of the outer bailey, but by 1785, the manor house was abandoned, its roof removed, and its interior dismantled. Following secularization, the castle became a Prussian state domain in 1803 and was sold at auction in 1816, leading to the dismantling of most structures except for the manor house. The moat was filled in, and in 1906/07, a spa hall was erected on the main house's foundations, later transformed into the present-day congress hall in 1955/56. Since 1946, the castle has been owned by the city of Bad Lippspringe.

Exploring the Ruins

Visitors to Burg Lippspringe are greeted by the remnants of a once formidable fortress, with the surviving manor house and sections of the surrounding walls offering a window into the past. The castle complex was originally divided into two parts, each surrounded by a circular moat fed by the Lippe River. The main castle measured approximately 40 by 24 meters, with the manor house located on its southern side.

Archaeological excavations in 1986 uncovered a pile foundation at the southwest corner of the manor house, possibly indicating the presence of a tower. While early depictions of the castle vary, it is believed that the main building, with its two corner towers, stood to the north, beneath today's congress hall. The castle chapel likely extended at a right angle to the east, with the entrance situated between it and the manor house. A keep is inferred from historical documents dated 1351 and 1550, though its exact location remains uncertain.
