Casa Thomas

Casa Thomas Barcelona

Casa Thomas

Casa Thomas, nestled in the heart of Barcelona, is a stunning example of Catalan modernism, designed by the renowned architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. This architectural gem, located on Carrer de Mallorca, 291-293, captivates visitors with its intricate design and historical significance, making it a must-see for anyone exploring the city's rich cultural heritage.

The History of Casa Thomas

Casa Thomas was commissioned by the successful printer and publisher Josep Thomas i Bigas in 1895. As his business flourished, he sought to establish a new headquarters that would also serve as his family's residence. The project was entrusted to Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a prominent figure in the modernist movement, known for his ability to blend functionality with artistic expression. The building was completed in 1898, and its design reflects the artistic and industrial aspirations of its owner.

In 1912, the building underwent an expansion led by Francesc Guàrdia i Vial, Domènech's son-in-law, who added three additional floors and bay windows to the façade. This expansion respected the original style, maintaining the building's modernist charm. In 1980, a restoration by Cristian Cirici i Alomar further preserved its architectural integrity, earning the project a National Restoration Award.

Exploring Casa Thomas

Casa Thomas is a feast for the eyes, with its façade showcasing a harmonious blend of stone, ceramics, and wrought iron. The building features a semi-basement, ground floor, main floor, three additional floors, an attic, and a walkable rooftop. The façade's central section is flanked by two towers, creating a unique silhouette that breaks the symmetry of the structure.

The ground floor is particularly striking, with a large central arch providing light and ventilation to the lower levels. This arch is adorned with medallions bearing the owner's initials, surrounded by sculpted foliage. The wrought ironwork, featuring floral motifs, adds to the building's artistic allure.

The Artistic Flourishes of Casa Thomas

The building's upper floors are equally impressive, with a variety of window designs, balconies, and galleries. The main floor boasts a continuous gallery supported by ionic columns, with intricate floral and vegetal reliefs. The use of glazed ceramics in blue and gold hues, featuring eagles and flowers, adds a touch of elegance to the façade.

The lateral sections of the building feature polygonal bay windows, supported by stone columns, and connected by a continuous balcony adorned with stone balustrades depicting intertwined sunflowers. The top floors are characterized by large galleries reminiscent of medieval Barcelona architecture, complete with floral capitals and sunburst motifs.

Inside Casa Thomas

The interior of Casa Thomas retains much of its original charm, with marble floors, wooden moldings, and decorative tiles. The grand staircase leading to the main floor is a highlight, featuring a marble balustrade with sculpted palmettes.
