In 1856, Charles de Brouchoven de Bergeyck undertook significant renovations and expansions, transforming the castle into its current form. During this period, the Renaissance-style cross windows were removed, and the entrance portal was redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style. The interior also underwent extensive changes, with new decorations and furnishings added to reflect the tastes of the time. Following the death of Charles de Brouchoven de Bergeyck's widow in 1960, the castle was left unused, and its furnishings were auctioned off in 1961. In 1966, the castle and its surrounding park were sold to the municipality of Beveren. The castle has since been restored and repurposed as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts. From May to September, visitors can explore the beautifully restored rooms and the castle chapel during free guided tours on Sundays.
As you approach Cortewalle Castle, you are greeted by a picturesque scene of the castle's pale sandstone walls rising from the surrounding moat. The castle's quadrangular layout, with its two-story wings and connecting lower wings, encircles a charming rectangular courtyard. The single-story coach house, built of brick with a blue stone base, retains its original arched doorways, now converted into windows. The central section of the building is topped with a triangular pediment, adding to its classical elegance.
