Stella Maris

Stella Maris Binz

Stella Maris

Stella Maris, the enchanting Catholic church nestled in the picturesque seaside town of Binz on the island of Rügen, is a beacon of both spiritual solace and architectural intrigue. With its unique blend of historical charm and modern design, this church is a must-visit for anyone exploring the cultural landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The History of Stella Maris

The story of Stella Maris begins in the early 20th century, during the challenging post-World War I era. It was in 1924 that Professor Wilhelm Bong from Vienna laid the groundwork for a Catholic children’s holiday home. By 1925, a small chapel had been constructed to serve the spiritual needs of the community. This humble beginning marked the start of a significant Catholic presence in the region.

The arrival of more Catholics during the construction of the KdF holiday complex in Prora in 1935 further solidified the church’s role in Binz. Following World War II, the congregation swelled with displaced people from the eastern territories, transforming the chapel into an essential spiritual hub.

Architectural Evolution

Originally a simple, whitewashed hall with a stepped gable, Stella Maris underwent a significant transformation in 2009/2010. The church was expanded to accommodate the growing number of worshippers, especially during the bustling summer months. The Stralsund architect Burkhardt Eriksson designed a striking oval extension, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.

The new building features a bright, circular wooden structure that can seat up to 200 people. Its interior is a celebration of curves, with a continuous band of windows under the ceiling accentuating the roundness of the space. The altar, positioned almost centrally, is surrounded by gracefully curved wooden pews, creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere.

Artistic Touches

The artistic elements within Stella Maris are both subtle and profound. The altar and supporting parts of the ambo and baptismal font are crafted from light Gotland limestone, a material typical of the Baltic Sea region. The floor is made of Anröchter green sandstone, and the pews are constructed from oiled oak wood, adding warmth and texture to the space.

Artist Evelyn Körber designed the church’s furnishings, ensuring that each piece complements the overall aesthetic. Sylvia Vandermeer’s paintings of the Stations of the Cross, rendered in glaze on 15 gold leaf panels, add a touch of ethereal beauty to the church’s interior.

A Modern Sanctuary

Despite its historical roots, Stella Maris embraces modernity. The absence of a traditional pipe organ is compensated by an electronic instrument, ensuring that music continues to play a vital role in the church’s services. This blend of old and new reflects the church’s commitment to serving its community while honoring its past.

The Community and Beyond

Stella Maris is more than just a church; it is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its community. The expansion project, completed in 2011, was made possible through the support of the Archdiocese of Berlin, the Bonifatiuswerk, the EU, and private sponsors and donors. This collective effort highlights the church’s importance not only to its congregation but also to the wider community.

Today, Stella Maris is part of the parish of St. Bernhard Stralsund – Rügen – Demmin, within the Archdiocese of Berlin. It continues to welcome visitors from near and far, offering a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural tapestry.

Visiting Stella Maris

A visit to Stella Maris is a journey through time and an exploration of architectural innovation. As you step inside, you are enveloped by the serene atmosphere and the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Whether you are attending a service or simply exploring the space, Stella Maris promises a memorable experience.

In conclusion, Stella Maris stands as a symbol of faith and community, reflecting the enduring spirit of Binz and its people. Its walls tell stories of resilience, adaptation, and the unwavering dedication to providing a sanctuary for all who seek solace and inspiration. A visit to this remarkable church is not just a tour of a building, but an invitation to become part of its ongoing story.
