First Baptist Church was founded in November 1887 by Allen Hill of Jennings County, Indiana. The church's humble beginnings saw its first meeting on November 14, 1887, with just 12 members. By the end of the month, the congregation had grown to 28 members. Initially, the church met in the Morton House Hotel, which was located on what is now the 100 block of Willow Court. Allen Hill’s tenure as pastor was brief, lasting only about four months.
In April 1888, B.P. Hewitt took over as the church’s permanent pastor, and the congregation moved to the Hohman Opera House at the corner of State and Hohman to accommodate its growing numbers. In 1889, the church constructed its own building for $2,358, thanks to a generous land donation from Marcus Towle, Hammond's first mayor and a member of the church.
The early 20th century marked significant growth and expansion for First Baptist Church. On January 3, 1901, Pastor E.T. Carter proposed the construction of a new building, and the first service in this new structure was held on April 14, 1901. However, Carter resigned later that year to take a position at the Central Baptist Orphanage in Michigan.
The mid-20th century saw the church's Sunday school program become a major attraction, using carnival-like entertainment and a fleet of over 200 buses to bring thousands of people from the Chicago Southland and northern Indiana to the church. By 1975, the church’s weekly attendance had soared to 14,000, with a peak of over 30,000 in March of that year. Time magazine even described the church’s claim of having the world’s largest Sunday school as rock solid for the U.S., if not the world.
