Over the centuries, San Nicola witnessed numerous changes, including a devastating earthquake in 1783 that caused the collapse of its vault and damages from World War II bombings in 1943.

In 1961, the original 17th-century structure was demolished to make way for urban development. However, the spirit of San Nicola was preserved.
