The History of St Peter's Church

The project received a substantial grant of £5,501 from the Church Building Commission, equivalent to a staggering £610,000 today. The total cost of the church’s construction amounted to £6,786, which would be around £750,000 in contemporary currency.

The foundation stone was laid on July 19, 1827, and the church was consecrated on September 13, 1829. Initially dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the church was rededicated to St Peter in 1972 when its parish merged with two other parishes. During the Second World War, the church's choir featured a young Don Estelle, who later gained fame as an actor and singer in the 1970s.

Architectural Marvels of St Peter's Church

St Peter's Church is a stunning example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture, a style characterized by its vertical lines and intricate stonework. The church is constructed from sandstone, with a slate roof that adds to its historic charm. The exterior of the church is marked by a seven-bay nave and apsidal sanctuary, all contained within a single cell. The top stage of the tower features five-light louvred bell openings, and the parapet is battlemented with eight flat-topped pinnacles. The clerestory windows have flat heads and three lights with cinquefoil heads, while the aisle windows are two-light with Perpendicular tracery. The apse contains three windows similar to those on the sides of the aisles, creating a harmonious architectural flow.

Inside St Peter's Church

The interior of St Peter's Church is equally impressive, featuring seven-bay Perpendicular-style arcades supported by slim piers. Galleries on three sides add to the sense of grandeur, while the west end has been partitioned under the gallery. One of the church's most striking features is the alabaster reredos, installed in 1923 as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the First World War.

The stained glass in the central east window, created by Shrigley and Hunt in 1896, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Another notable window by J. Holmes dates from the later part of the 19th century. The church also houses a remarkable three-manual organ built in 1887 by Jardine, which has undergone several refurbishments over the years, including work by Norman and Beard in 1910 and Binns, Fitton and Haley in 1934.
