Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent numerous transformations, evolving from a modest hall without a tower into a grand basilica, and then back to a hall after the elevation of its side aisles. In 1573, the cathedral was seized by Lutherans during the Reformation, a time of religious upheaval across Europe. It wasn’t until 1616 that the church was returned to the Catholic faith, following an agreement between Bishop Szymon Rudnicki and the city council of Elbląg.

April 26, 1777, marked a dark day for St. Nicholas Cathedral when a fierce storm resulted in a lightning strike that set the tower ablaze. The ensuing fire ravaged the entire structure, consuming the roof and causing the vaults to collapse. The city, financially strained, could not restore the cathedral to its former glory. Instead, the building was lowered by over 6.5 meters, and Baroque sail vaults were installed. Despite these changes, the spirit of the cathedral endured.

The early 20th century saw a significant investment in the cathedral’s future with the construction of a new tower between 1906 and 1907. Standing at 95 meters, this tower became a prominent feature of the Elbląg skyline and housed a library and a set of bronze bells.

Surviving the Wars

During World War I, the cathedral’s bells were requisitioned for the war effort, only to be replaced in 1928. The period between the wars was marked by restoration and conservation efforts, thanks to the dedication of figures like Father Arthur Kather, who opposed the Nazi regime and was eventually exiled in 1940.
