Lake Eustis Museum of Art

In the heart of Eustis, Florida, the Lake Eustis Museum of Art stands as a beacon of creativity and cultural enrichment. Since its inception in 1995, this charming institution has been dedicated to showcasing the vibrant world of visual arts, drawing visitors from near and far to explore its diverse exhibitions and programs. Whether you're an art aficionado or a curious traveler, the museum offers a captivating journey through the world of art, nestled in the picturesque setting of Lake County.

A Journey Through History

The Lake Eustis Museum of Art began its journey as the Lake Eustis Center of the Arts, founded by a passionate group of 66 artists and art patrons. Housed initially in an 1881 storefront on Bay Street, the museum quickly became a cultural hub in downtown Eustis. Its founders envisioned a space that would nurture culture and beauty, and their vision has blossomed into the vibrant museum we see today.

As the museum evolved, it was renamed the Lake Eustis Museum of Art, with a renewed commitment to exhibiting and collecting fine art. Over the years, the museum expanded its offerings, introducing exhibitions, art events, children's programs, and adult field trips. Although the annual outdoor art festival is no longer held, the museum's influence and membership continued to grow, necessitating a move to a larger space across from Eustis City Hall in 2004.

Exhibitions and Programs

The Lake Eustis Museum of Art is renowned for its dynamic exhibitions, featuring works from local, regional, and national artists. Its collection has grown significantly, with notable exhibits such as the groundbreaking display of works by high-functioning autistic youngsters during the United Arts of Central Florida's ArtsFest. This commitment to inclusivity and community engagement earned the museum a nomination for the 2009 United Arts of Central Florida Arts+ Award.

The museum also hosts a national competition and exhibition of paper artworks, drawing artists from across the country. For those interested in honing their artistic skills, the museum offers the Create & Critique sessions for adult water-medium painters, guided by the dedicated Mary Ziegengeist. Her contributions to the community were recognized with the Lake County Community Service Arts and Culture Award in 2010.

Educational Opportunities

Education is at the heart of the Lake Eustis Museum of Art's mission. The museum extends its reach to home-schooled students and offers a 10-week adult sketch study class. In partnership with the Central Florida Water Color Society, the museum curates fine art exhibits at City Hall, enriching the cultural landscape of Eustis.

The museum's Bonnie Gillespie Reference Library provides an invaluable resource for art enthusiasts, offering a collection of art reference books. Additionally, the FRIENDS Literary Guild meets monthly to discuss and review art-related fiction and non-fiction, fostering a community of art lovers and readers.

A New Chapter

In 2012, the museum welcomed a new director, Richard D. Colvin, who brought fresh energy and vision to the institution. Under his leadership, the museum relocated to a stunning location on Lake Eustis in Ferran Park. This move marked a new chapter for the museum, with popular exhibitions such as the members' exhibition and the retrospective of Catherine Haynes Stockwell's work, Painting Eustis.

The museum's fundraising efforts, including the annual Wine-A-Fare event, have been met with great success, supporting its mission and expanding its reach. New events like the holiday tree auction and a 1950s dance have further cemented the museum's role as a cultural cornerstone in the community.

A Bright Future

Despite facing challenges, such as the 2019 relocation due to financial constraints, the museum has persevered. Now known as the Lake County Museum of Art and located in Tavares, it continues to thrive with the support of the Herbert Lehner Foundation. The museum reopened with an exhibit by artist Liz Wincup, signaling a promising future for this beloved institution.

The Lake Eustis Museum of Art is more than just a museum; it's a testament to the power of art to unite and inspire. Its walls echo with the creativity of countless artists, and its programs invite visitors to explore the endless possibilities of the visual arts. Whether you're a seasoned art lover or a curious newcomer, a visit to the Lake Eustis Museum of Art promises an enriching and unforgettable experience.
