Grote Kerk

The Grote Kerk of Gorinchem, also known as the Great Church, is a monumental structure steeped in history and architectural splendor, located in the heart of Gorinchem in the South Holland province of the Netherlands. This church, which stands proudly on the Groenmarkt, is an integral part of the city's cultural and spiritual landscape.

A Journey Through Time

The origins of the Grote Kerk date back to the 13th century. On April 22, 1263, a Gothic hall church was consecrated on this site, dedicated to Saint Martin or Saint John. This early church, known as the Sint-Janstoren, was a significant place of worship for centuries. However, the Reformation in the latter half of the 16th century brought about a transformation, and the church began to be referred to as the Grote Kerk.

The church has witnessed numerous historical events, including damage during the winter of 1813-1814 when the French were expelled from the city. The structure suffered from bombardments as Russian and Prussian forces engaged the French. Consequently, the church was only used in fair weather until it was closed by the city authorities on August 31, 1844, due to its dilapidated condition. Not long after, the building was demolished.

The Rebirth of 1851

In the mid-19th century, the city of Gorinchem embarked on a mission to rebuild the church. Architect Warnsinck from Amsterdam, along with his pupil Abraham Nicolaas Godefroy, was commissioned to design a new structure. The result was a three-aisled church built in a blend of Romanesque and classical styles, seamlessly integrated with the 15th-century Grote or Sint-Janstoren. The new church was inaugurated on May 4, 1851, for Protestant worship.

Architectural Elegance

The interior of the Grote Kerk is a testament to architectural finesse. The walls and pilasters are adorned with white plaster, while the pilasters feature painted capitals. The nave is covered by a mirror vault, and the side aisles are topped with cross vaults. The church houses four remarkable state Bibles, which were restored in 2012 and 2013. Besides serving as a place of worship, the Grote Kerk also hosts art exhibitions, making it a vibrant cultural hub.

The Magnificent Organ

One of the highlights of the Grote Kerk is its impressive organ. Built by C.G.F. Witte in September 1853, this organ boasts three manuals and a Rückpositiv. It was Witte's first organ case designed in the so-called round arch style. The organ incorporates pipework from previous instruments, including those crafted by Johann Bätz in 1761 and Stephanus Cousijns in 1666. The main case is adorned with three statues created by the Utrecht sculptor Joannes Rijnbout. The organ's disposition and technical details reflect its historical significance and the craftsmanship of its builders.

The Towering Presence

The Grote Kerk's tower, known as the Grote Sint-Janstoren, is an iconic feature of the Gorinchem skyline. The original tower likely collapsed after a fire in 1361. The current tower, standing at 67 meters, was constructed around 1450 on the church's west side. The spire was completed in 1517. However, during construction, the tower experienced subsidence, resulting in a noticeable tilt. Despite this, the tower remains a majestic structure, offering breathtaking views of Gorinchem and the surrounding areas from its summit. The tower, like the church, is listed in the national monuments register.

A Symphony of Bells

The tower houses two historic bells. The larger bell, cast by Aelt Janz. van Meurs in 1625, serves as the hour-strike bell. It bears the inscription VERBUM DOMINI MANET IN AETERNUM VOX MEA GRATA ALARDUS MEURS ME FECIT ANNO 1625. The smaller bell, dating back to 1481, was cast by Steven Butendiic and Jan van Vorscoten in Utrecht. This bell, originally from the Frisian town of Sondel, is used for the half-hour strike.

The carillon, a musical instrument consisting of a series of bells, was cast in 1965 by the Petit & Fritsen foundry. This carillon includes a range of bells from c1 to c5, with the largest weighing 2,150 kg. The bells are connected to a keyboard, allowing for both manual and automatic playing. The carillon's history dates back to the 16th century, with various iterations and restorations over the centuries.
