The History of St. Joseph's Church

The origins of St. Joseph's Church date back to 1869 when the foundation stone was laid, thanks to the efforts of Catholic students from Westphalia, the Rhineland, and Silesia. Designed by architect Hugo Schneider, the church was constructed as a mission church dedicated to Pope Pius IX. The funding for this ambitious project came from Catholic professors and students of the University of Greifswald, along with Polish seasonal workers who were a significant presence in the agricultural landscape of Pomerania.

The church was blessed on November 15, 1871, with a bilingual Mass in German and Polish, reflecting the diverse community it served. From 1929 to 1943, the church was under the pastoral care of Alfons Maria Wachsmann, a theologian and resistance fighter against National Socialism. Wachsmann's tenure saw the church undergo an expressionist transformation, consecrated by Bishop Christian Schreiber in 1932. Tragically, Wachsmann's opposition to the Nazi regime led to his arrest and execution in 1944. He is honored with a grave of honor at the church.

Architectural Highlights

St. Joseph's Church is a neo-Gothic masterpiece, constructed from red brick with a cross-shaped layout. The church features a polygonal choir, a prominent west tower with narrow side halls, and a sacristy nestled between the choir and the southern transept. The tower, with its four stories and pointed spire transitioning from square to octagonal, is a defining feature of the church's silhouette.

Inside, the church boasts a ribbed vault supported by baroque-style pilasters, with a six-part vault crowning the choir. The walls of the choir and transept are adorned with large, flat pointed arch panels. The church's interior is largely the result of Alfons Maria Wachsmann's influence, including the tabernacle, altar, crucifix, and an expressionist figure of the Risen Christ. A painted Stations of the Cross by Martin Pautsch adds to the church's artistic treasures.

Modern Enhancements

In the years 1974 to 1977, the altar area was remodeled, and a new gallery and seating were installed. The church received a new organ in 1986, crafted by VEB Orgelbau Dresden (Jehmlich), which continues to enrich the church's musical offerings. The late 20th century saw the installation of three altar windows depicting scenes from the life of Mary, based on designs by Rudolf Brückner-Fuhlrott.

A major renovation in 1999 included the installation of a new warm air heating system, a new floor, and slight modifications to the altar area, ensuring the church remains a comfortable and inviting space for worship and reflection.

A Center for the Catholic Community

In 1992, St. Joseph's was elevated to the status of a provost church, establishing it as a focal point for Catholics in Western Pomerania. The first provost was Msgr. Georg Bengsch, brother of the former Archbishop of Berlin, Alfred Cardinal Bengsch. Since 2020, St. Joseph's has served as the parish church for the newly founded parish of St. Otto.
