The story of Kasteel Le Paige is deeply intertwined with the Le Paige family, a prominent family in Herentals. The family's connection to the town dates back to the early 18th century when Dr. François Thomas Le Paige settled here in 1726. Over the years, the family acquired the land that would become Domain Le Paige, transforming it into a beautiful estate. In 1890, Remi Le Paige became the sole owner of the domain and expanded it further through additional land purchases and exchanges.
The castle itself was constructed in 1892, likely designed by the architect J.B. Van Bouchout. Over the years, the castle underwent several modifications, but it retained its neo-Flemish Renaissance style with eclectic elements. The last member of the Le Paige family to own the castle was Hubert Le Paige, whose wife bequeathed it to the church upon her death in 1976. The castle was intended to serve as a church or be replaced by one, but this proved impractical. As a result, the castle remained vacant for many years and fell into disrepair. In 2005, the park was transformed into an open-air church with an altar and benches, known as the green cathedral, where annual services are held.
A visit to Kasteel Le Paige is like stepping back in time. The castle's exterior is a testament to its neo-Flemish Renaissance style, with its brick construction, stone banding, cross windows, and arched doorways. The side portico, the broad staircase at the front entrance, and various other elements are made of blue stone, adding to the castle's grandeur. The front facade features a baroque gable, and the staircase has neoclassical elements, showcasing the eclectic mix of styles that define the castle.

Inside the castle, visitors will find a central hall that separates the living quarters from the guest reception area. The grand staircase immediately catches the eye, and the rooms are decorated in various styles, including neoclassicism, neo-Renaissance, and even an Art Nouveau salon. The castle boasts murals and stained glass windows, adding to its historical charm. A separate staircase connects the basement, living quarters, and attic, allowing the service staff to move about without disturbing the family or guests. The staff quarters were located in the attic, which also served as storage space, while the kitchen, laundry room, and wine cellar were in the basement.
The park surrounding Kasteel Le Paige is designed in the style of an English garden, complete with a variety of flowers, ornamental shrubs, and trees. The botanical section of the park dates back to the early 19th century and was likely redesigned as a pleasure garden after the castle was built. The collection of plants and shrubs grew over the years, thanks in part to donations from missionaries who appreciated the family's support. The arboretum is home to around 70 different tree species, including notable ones such as the single-styled hawthorn, Lebanon cedar, summer oak, silver linden, and Japanese zelkova, among others.
The domain's pond is a remnant of the fortifications that once surrounded the town, specifically the ravelin moat. A small bridge spans the pond, though it is in poor condition. The wrought iron balustrade is possibly the work of the Lier artist Louis Van Boeckel, adding a touch of artistic history to the site.
In the center of the domain stands a hill with a small ice cellar, dating back to the first half of the 19th century. Atop the hill is a partially painted brick pavilion, adorned with gnarled tree trunks. The names Emile Le Paige and Jeanette Le Paige are inscribed near the back door. Unfortunately, the pavilion is in a state of disrepair.
In the castle's front garden stands the statue of Mir, created by Rik Poot in 1988. This large bronze sculpture of a woman was once located at the courthouse but was later neglected. In 2012, it was gifted to the city of Herentals by Secretary of State Servais Verherstraeten.
After its restoration in 2000, Kasteel Le Paige was given a sociocultural role. It is now part of the cultural center 't Schaliken in Herentals and can be rented for various events. The castle regularly hosts exhibitions, making it a vibrant part of the local community.
Across the street from the castle is the Coach House Le Paige, which once served as a coach house and concierge residence. It was rebuilt in a neostyle and expanded with stables. The building was protected as a cityscape in 1979 and was renovated in the 2010s. Until 2017, it functioned as a dining and drinking establishment with an attached banquet hall.
