Santa Caterina da Siena

Santa Caterina da Siena, a striking architectural gem in Livorno, Italy, stands proudly in the historic district of Venezia Nuova. Known locally as Chiesa di Santa Caterina, this church is a testament to the rich history and cultural tapestry of the city. Its towering dome is a prominent feature of Livorno's skyline, drawing visitors to explore its fascinating past and artistic treasures.

The History of Santa Caterina da Siena

The origins of Santa Caterina da Siena date back to 1720 when it was commissioned to replace a smaller church attached to the Dominican convent. Designed by the architect Giovanni del Fantasia, the church was intended to echo the grandeur of Rome's Pantheon. However, construction faced numerous interruptions, leading to a series of architects, including Alessandro Saller, Giovanni Masini, and Giuseppe Ruggeri, overseeing its completion.

One of the most challenging aspects of the construction was the octagonal dome. Structural issues required the addition of a robust drum to support the magnificent dome, which continues to dominate the Livornese skyline. In 1753, the church, though incomplete, was opened for worship and entrusted to the Dominican fathers. During the Napoleonic era, the adjoining convent was repurposed as a prison, a function it maintained until the late 20th century. Recent restoration efforts have transformed the site into the new home for the State Archives, while extensive renovations on the church's dome were completed in 2005.

Exploring Santa Caterina da Siena

The church's architecture is a captivating blend of octagonal design with side chapels, crowned by a dome that soars nearly fifty meters high, thanks to the addition of a lantern in 1869 by Dario Giacomelli. The façade, left in a raw state like many Tuscan churches, features a grand portal aligned with a colorful window. Inside, the space is illuminated by the dome's large windows, and the structure is supported by eight grand pillars that uphold the drum of the dome.

Visitors are treated to the breathtaking 19th-century frescoes by Cesare Maffei, which, despite damage from water infiltration, remain one of the largest frescoed spaces in Tuscany, covering 1,500 square meters. The frescoes depict scenes such as Saint Dominic receiving the rosary from the Madonna, the Four Evangelists, and various episodes from the Life of Mary.

Artistic Treasures and Chapels

Within the choir, a notable oil painting by Vasari, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, was restored and returned to the church in 2007. Originally located in Rome's Vatican chapel, it was gifted to the church by Antonio Filicchi before 1818. The chapels surrounding the central space are nestled within the arches supporting the dome.

The chapel of Saint Catherine, to the right of the main entrance, houses a wooden statue of the saint and a fresco by Giuseppe Maria Terreni, depicting the Glory of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Previously dedicated to Vincent Ferrer, his statue now graces the church entrance. The Chapel of Jesus of Pity features a life-sized papier-mâché statue of Jesus, known as Jesus of the Cane, dating from the late 17th century.

The Musical Heritage

A highlight of Santa Caterina da Siena is its grand organ, constructed by Antonio Ducci in 1837. Restored in 2011, it boasts 1,200 pipes and is one of Tuscany's most significant organs. The organ's cover, painted by Luigi Ademollo, features an image of Saint Catherine.

The left side of the church concludes with the Chapel of the Madonna of Montenero, where the relics of Saint Vigilia, once a co-patroness of Livorno, are enshrined. These relics were transferred from Cagliari to Livorno in the 17th century and have been housed in Santa Caterina since the demolition of their original oratory.

Santa Caterina da Siena is more than a church; it is a beacon of history, art, and culture, inviting visitors to delve into its storied past and appreciate the beauty of its architecture and artistic treasures. Whether you're drawn by its historical significance or the allure of its frescoes and paintings, Santa Caterina da Siena offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Livorno's rich heritage.
