St Mary Aldermary, a captivating architectural gem nestled in the heart of the City of London, offers a unique blend of history and community spirit. This enchanting church stands proudly at the junction of Bow Lane and Watling Street, inviting passersby to explore its rich past and vibrant present.
The origins of St Mary Aldermary stretch back over 900 years, making it one of the oldest churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the City. Its name, often interpreted as Elder Mary, signifies its ancient roots compared to nearby St Mary-le-Bow. The church's history is intertwined with notable figures and events, including the patronage of the rectory by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1400.
In 1510, Sir Henry Keeble embarked on the ambitious task of rebuilding the church. Although he passed away before its completion, his vision was realized with the help of generous legacies. The church was finally completed in 1632, only to be severely damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
Following the devastation of the Great Fire, St Mary Aldermary was rebuilt under the guidance of Sir Christopher Wren's office. Unlike most of Wren's City churches, it was constructed in the Gothic Revival style, fulfilling a legacy left by Henry Rogers. The church's design features a nave with aisles, a short chancel, and a tower adorned with octagonal turrets and intricate carvings. Inside, the stunning plaster fan vaulting of the ceilings captivates visitors with its elaborate beauty.
Nikolaus Pevsner, a renowned architectural historian, hailed St Mary Aldermary as a chief monument of the 17th-century Gothic revival in the City, and one of the most important late 17th-century Gothic churches in England.
