The History of St. Johannes Evangelist

The story of this captivating church begins in the late 15th century. Construction commenced in 1492 and was completed around 1520, making it the youngest medieval ecclesiastical building in Marburg. Originally part of a monastery belonging to the Kugelherren, the church's name and the street it stands on, Kugelgasse, pay homage to the Gugel, a cap with a long tail worn by the brothers.

Following the dissolution of the monastery in 1527, the church was bequeathed to the newly established University of Marburg. For a time, it served as an auditorium and lecture hall for the theological faculty. In 1827, it found a new purpose as a parish church for the local Catholic community, a role it continues to fulfill to this day.

Architectural Marvels

St. Johannes Evangelist is a striking example of late Gothic architecture. The single-nave structure features six bays and a five-sided apse, with a transept extending to the west. The northern side of the church is windowless, but the large windows on the southern side and in the choir fill the space with light, illuminating the intricate tracery of the late Gothic stonework.

Some of its wooden figures are late Gothic in origin, dating back to the late 15th century. Beneath the gallery, a neo-Gothic altar dedicated to St. Elizabeth can be found, along with a baptismal font crafted from richly detailed neo-Gothic forms.

The Organ

Music lovers will be delighted by the church's organ, built in 1976 by Gerald Woehl of Marburg. This purely mechanical instrument boasts 38 registers across four manuals and a pedal. A unique feature is the Trompeteria in the fourth manual, where the trumpet registers are housed separately from the main organ.
