The story of St. Annakirche Opfikon begins in 1948 when the parish of Maria Lourdes in Zurich-Seebach acquired land in the heart of Glattbrugg for the future church. The foundation stone was laid on October 30, 1955, thanks to generous donations and fundraising efforts. Designed by architect Kopf from St. Gallen, the church was constructed between 1955 and 1956 and consecrated by Bishop Christian Caminada on October 28, 1956, in honor of St. Anna. It wasn't long before Opfikon-Glattbrugg was recognized as an independent parish on December 16, 1956.

In 1971, the parish came under the care of the Oratorium des hl. Philipp Neri community. The church underwent significant renovations in 1981-1982, spearheaded by Zurich architect Rudolf Mathys, to mitigate the noise from the nearby Zurich Airport. This renovation included an innovative interior redesign and soundproofing enhancements, culminating in a re-consecration by Bishop Johannes Vonderach on June 6, 1982.
