St. Peter und Paul Reichenbach im Vogtland

St. Peter und Paul

St. Peter und Paul Church in Reichenbach im Vogtland, Saxony, Germany, is a splendid example of Baroque architecture, a testament to the resilience and faith of its community. This evangelical church, known for its rich history and remarkable architecture, invites visitors to explore its storied past and admire its artistic and architectural treasures.

The History of St. Peter und Paul Church

The current St. Peter und Paul Church was constructed between 1721 and 1722, replacing an earlier structure that was destroyed in a devastating city fire in 1720. The original church dates back to the 13th century and had undergone several modifications before its unfortunate demise. The new Baroque-style church was built to reflect both the grandeur and the spiritual aspirations of the time.

The church has seen several significant renovations. In 1905 and 1906, a bridal hall was added, the west portal was inserted, and the interior was renewed. Further restorations took place in 1963 and 1964, focusing on the interior, and since 1996, the exterior has been meticulously restored to preserve its historical integrity.

Architectural Marvels

The church is a grand plastered building with a three-sided eastern end, buttresses, and side porches. The west tower, built on a square base, likely retains elements from the Romanesque period. It was completed in 1780 with an octagonal bell storey topped with a Baroque dome. The neo-Romanesque round-arched portal is adorned with a relief depicting Christ and the apostles Peter and Paul, adding a touch of spiritual artistry to the entrance.

Inside, the church is a spacious plastered structure with a flat stucco ceiling and two-story galleries running around the interior. The slightly convex organ gallery is decorated with the carved family crest of the von Metzsch family. The lower gallery in the north features two large carved lion figures holding the Reichenbach city coat of arms, which includes an image of the apostle Peter on a wall between two towers.

Exquisite Interior Features

One of the most striking features of St. Peter und Paul Church is its magnificent Baroque pulpit altar, created between 1723 and 1727. The pulpit is adorned with painted depictions of Christ's commission to John, as well as the prophets Elijah and, presumably, Isaiah. Flanking the pulpit are carved figures of the apostles Peter and Paul, with a radiant glory crowning the ensemble.

The church also houses a round marble baptismal font and a lectern from around 1723, adding to the historical ambiance. A life-size wooden crucifix from around 1680 and another crucifix made of boxwood from the mid-17th century are preserved within the church. Additionally, two large oil paintings by Ludwig Otto, created in 1914, depict Christ's visit to Martha and Mary and Christ with Nicodemus, adding a touch of artistic elegance to the interior.

The Renowned Organ

The church's organ, originally crafted by the famed organ builder Gottfried Silbermann in 1725, is a notable highlight. The original organ had 29 registers on two manuals and a pedal. Despite several modifications, including significant changes in 1906 and 1927 by Jehmlich, 22 registers of the original organ have been preserved, either wholly or in part.

In 1971 and 1972, the organ was completely rebuilt by Jehmlich, using wooden pipes from four pedal registers, the bass pipes of the Gedackt 8', and the wooden parts of the case. The new organ, constructed in a historicizing style, features 26 registers on two manuals and a pedal. The current disposition reflects a blend of historical and modern elements, maintaining the organ's rich and resonant sound.

The Bells of St. Peter und Paul

The church's bell ensemble originally consisted of three steel-cast bells and one bronze bell, with a steel bell frame and steel-cast bell yokes. In recent years, the bell ensemble has been updated with three new bronze bells installed in a new oak bell frame. The memorial bell was refurbished in 2021 after defects were discovered, ensuring the church's bells continue to ring out their harmonious tones over Reichenbach.
