Devillaine's tenure saw the building transformed into the headquarters for his banking operations, during which he financed the construction of the canal from Roanne to Digoin. Following Devillaine’s bankruptcy, the state acquired the building in 1850, converting it into the Sous-préfecture. The mansion continued to play host to distinguished guests, including Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, who visited in 1852.
