Nestled in the picturesque village of Staphorst, the Dorpskerk, also known locally as the Dorpskerk van Staphorst, stands as a testament to the rich religious and cultural heritage of the Netherlands. This grand church, one of the largest in the country by seating capacity, offers both a spiritual haven and a glimpse into the historical tapestry of this charming region.
The history of Dorpskerk can be traced back to before 1282, when Staphorst had its first church. Originally located near the oldest cemetery by the Rienkskanaal, the church has undergone several transformations over the centuries. In 1436, a more permanent stone structure was erected, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, featuring two bells housed in a bell chair. This building bore a resemblance to the collegiate church in Weerselo.
By 1752, the church's location had become inconvenient due to the expanding settlement and the impassable church path during rainy weather. Thanks to the generous donation of 3,500 guilders from Antoni Frederik Coning, a new church was constructed on a spacious square opposite the parsonage. Completed in just a few months, the new cruciform church opened its doors in December 1752, marking the beginning of a new era for the congregation.
The current Dorpskerk was built between 1952 and 1954, as the previous structure could no longer accommodate the growing congregation. The church's design follows the Hague hall type, and it was significantly expanded in 1991 and 1992, increasing its seating capacity to 2,300. This expansion required the demolition of a nearby farm. The church tower, a remnant from 1763, was preserved and heightened from 20 to 32 meters to maintain architectural harmony with the new church structure. Although the tower is a national monument, it remains under the ownership of the civil municipality rather than the church itself.

Today, the Dorpskerk serves the Reformed Congregation of Staphorst, the largest of its kind in the Netherlands, with over 4,775 members as of 2012. The church is a vibrant hub for worship, holding services twice every Sunday. It is not just a place of worship but also a cultural landmark, where tradition meets modernity. A portion of the female congregation still wears traditional attire, preserving the unique cultural identity of Staphorst.
